HubSpot takes a contact out of a sequence when something suggests the conversation has moved on. That can be a reply, including replies from a different address or an alias, and replies from a colleague at the same company when the sequence is set to unenroll the whole company. A booked meeting, a bounce or an unsubscribe does the same. When a contact can't be enrolled at all, check whether they're already in another sequence, since HubSpot allows one at a time, or whether an earlier email to them bounced.
Open the contact record first. If they're still enrolled, a banner says so, and the Last sequence enrolled property identifies the sequence. Last sequence ended date tells you when they were last unenrolled, and the activity timeline shows the last step they completed along with any reply or meeting logged around then. When an enrollment fails, HubSpot shows an error code such as ALREADY_ENROLLED or BOUNCED, which points you to the right section below.
Why contacts leave a sequence early
They replied, from any address
With the reply switch on, which is the default, a reply to any sequence email ends the enrollment. So does an email the contact sends you outside the sequence from the enrolled address. A reply from a different address and an email from an alias of the enrolled address also unenroll them. Out-of-office replies are usually ignored, with one gap HubSpot names: a Gmail out-of-office sent to an Outlook inbox isn't recognised, so that contact is unenrolled (HubSpot's unenrollment rules).
Someone else at their company replied or booked
On the sequence's Automate tab, the reply and meeting switches each have a dropdown. Set to All contacts at the company, one person replying or booking takes every enrolled colleague out too. Set to The contact, only the person who acted leaves.
They booked a meeting
Booking through a meetings link in any sequence email unenrolls the contact, even when the link belongs to another user. Meetings booked from the contact record or on an integrated Google Calendar only count when the contact booked with the user who enrolled them. A meeting logged on another record also has to be associated with the contact.
They bounced or unsubscribed
A bounce ends the enrollment, and so does unsubscribing through the link in a sequence email. Both can stop you enrolling that person again, as the error codes below show. For bounces in general, see hard and soft bounces.
A workflow, a trigger or a person removed them
On Sales Hub or Service Hub Enterprise, a workflow can remove contacts with the Unenroll from sequence action, and that reaches private sequences too. On Professional, a workflow created from a sequence's Automation tab can unenroll contacts from that sequence. Anyone who can communicate with a contact can pause or unenroll them from any sequence, and a manual unenrollment is recorded as done by a user. Contacts also drop out when the sequence is deleted, or when the user who created it is downgraded or removed from the account.
Contacts who replied and stayed in
The opposite happens too. If a rep moves to a new email provider while threads are still open, HubSpot stops seeing replies, so contacts who answer aren't unenrolled and keep getting follow-ups. Reconnecting the inbox with the correct provider fixes it (reply logging rules). Also check that nobody turned the reply switch off.
Why a contact can't be enrolled
Sequences need a Sales Hub or Service Hub Professional or Enterprise subscription and an assigned Sales or Service seat, as of October 2026 (enrollment requirements). With that in place, these are the codes you'll meet (HubSpot's full list):
- ALREADY_ENROLLED. The contact is already enrolled in a sequence, and contacts can only be in one at a time. Check Last sequence enrolled to see which one, then unenroll them from it.
- BOUNCED, RECIPIENT_PREVIOUSLY_BOUNCED_ON_PORTAL or RECIPIENT_PREVIOUSLY_BOUNCED_GLOBALLY. Email to this address bounced, in your account or across HubSpot. Confirm the address is current. If you're sure a global bounce is wrong, HubSpot Support can look at it.
- UNSUBSCRIBED or UNSUBSCRIBED_PERSONAL. The contact opted out of all email from you, or of one-to-one email. With data privacy settings on, you also need a legal basis for processing. If the opt-out was a mistake, see how to resubscribe a contact.
- BLOCKED_ADDRESS, BLOCKED_DOMAIN, PREVIOUSLY_MARKED_AS_SPAM or OTHER_SEND_REJECTED. HubSpot has blocked the address or domain, the contact marked an earlier email as spam, or their mail provider dropped an earlier sequence email.
Some failures have nothing to do with the contact. A contact with no email address can't be enrolled. The person enrolling needs their own connected individual work email, and the sequence must be shared with the user chosen as sender. Enrolling several contacts at once needs the Bulk enroll sequences permission and tops out at 50 per enrollment. A user over their daily send limit can't enroll anyone, and a workflow in that situation skips the action (workflow limits).
How to fix it and re-enroll the right people
- Find the reason from the contact record and timeline, or from the error code at enrollment.
- If colleagues' replies or meetings are pulling people out, change the dropdown on the Automate tab to The contact and save.
- For ALREADY_ENROLLED, decide which sequence matters more, unenroll the contact from the other one, then enroll.
- For bounces, confirm the address is up to date before trying again. Don't try to re-enroll contacts who marked an earlier email as spam.
- Re-enroll contacts who left by mistake from the Enrollments tab with Reenroll, choosing the step they should start at. The inbox used for the first enrollment must still be connected, and unsubscribed contacts can't be re-enrolled.
- If you edited the sequence after they enrolled, use Enroll contacts with Start at set to their next step, because Reenroll keeps the old version.
- For a group, add them to a static segment, select them there, click Enroll in sequence and pick the starting step (managing enrollments).
How to stop it happening again
Decide on purpose whether one reply should end outreach to a whole company, and set the Automate tab to match on every sequence. Take bounced addresses off the lists you enroll from. A saved view filtered on Last sequence ended date makes a sudden wave of unenrollments easy to spot. Ask reps to warn you before anyone changes mail provider. If emails stop going out while contacts are still enrolled, that's a different problem, covered in sequence emails not sending.

Questions
Does unenrolling stop emails that were already sent?
No. It only cancels the steps still to come. Emails already sent stay sent, and the enrollment still counts in your sequence data.
Can a contact be in two sequences at once?
No. HubSpot allows one active sequence per contact, so you have to unenroll them before another one can start.
Can I stop replies from unenrolling contacts?
Yes. Turn off the When a contact replies to any email switch on the sequence's Automate tab. Someone then has to read replies and unenroll people by hand, or contacts who answered will keep getting follow-ups.
Did this fix it?
Good to hear. If something else in the portal looks off, the help centre has more fixes.
Some problems need someone to look inside the portal. Book a free 30-minute call and show me what's happening. If it needs work, you get a written scope and one fixed price.
