When HubSpot sequence emails stop going out, check the sender's side first. The inbox of the user who enrolled the contacts has lost its connection to HubSpot, or a task step is holding everything up, because by default a sequence waits for each task to be completed before it moves on. The user may also have hit their daily send limit, or someone may have paused the sequence.
Start with the sequence itself. Open it and click the Enrollments tab, where the left sidebar groups contacts by status: Scheduled, In progress, Paused, Finished and Error. A pile of contacts under Paused or Error tells you where to look next. The Scheduled tab on the sequences dashboard shows each contact's next email.
Why HubSpot sequence emails don't send
The sender's inbox is disconnected
Sequence emails are one-to-one emails. They go out through the connected individual work email of the user who enrolled the contact, and HubSpot's marketing email servers aren't involved (sequence requirements). If that inbox drops its connection, the step fails with an Inbox disconnected error. A changed email password or revoked app access are the common triggers, and on Google accounts removing HubSpot's access makes every scheduled sequence email fail (what removing Google access does). For a Permanent fail error, HubSpot also suggests reconnecting the inbox. See inbox disconnected or not syncing for how.
A task step is holding the sequence
Call tasks, manual email tasks and general tasks pause the sequence until someone marks the task complete. That is the default, so if a rep never completes the task, the next automated email never goes. When enrolling, you can tick Continue without completing task on a task step. A manual email task never sends by itself either. It only reminds the rep.
Someone paused it
A sequence can be paused on its own, for one contact, or with Pause all on the Manage tab. Pausing a whole sequence only covers the contacts you enrolled, so the same sequence can be paused for your contacts and still running for a colleague's. Anyone who can communicate with a contact can also pause that one contact from their record. On resume, it picks up where it stopped, and a delay that was already running only waits out the time left (pause and resume).
The email is waiting for its send window
Follow-ups only go out on business days unless someone turned off Execute steps on business days only in the sequence settings, and they wait for the Automated email send window. Delays count business days, so an email sent on a Thursday with a three-day delay goes out the following Tuesday. Steps run in the time zone chosen at enrollment. When you enroll contacts in bulk, HubSpot sends at most three emails a minute, so big batches take a while.
The user hit a send limit
Each user with a Sales or Service seat has their own sequence limit. A Professional seat allows up to 500 emails a day and an Enterprise seat up to 1,000, as of October 2026 (HubSpot's send limits). On Sales Hub Professional or Enterprise, an admin can set a custom daily send limit that takes precedence over the seat limit, so a low custom limit can also hold emails back. The day is a rolling 24 hours, checked forwards and backwards, and the count includes emails already scheduled from earlier enrollments and from paused ones. Your email provider's own limits apply on top, and connecting the same Office 365 account more than once in a HubSpot account can trigger rate limit errors fast. A contact who fails with Rate limit reached has to be re-enrolled at the following step.
The seat, plan or inbox type is wrong
Sequences need a Sales Hub or Service Hub Professional or Enterprise subscription, and the user needs an assigned Sales or Service seat (enrollment requirements). A team email connected to the conversations inbox can't send sequence emails. When a workflow enrolls contacts, the sender it names needs a seat and a connected individual work email. See assigning seats if that's the gap.
The recipient is blocked
Bounced, spam-flagged and unsubscribed contacts can't be enrolled. Those codes are in why contacts get unenrolled or can't be enrolled.
Gmail or your computer clock got in the way
When you enroll from Gmail with the HubSpot Sales extension, Gmail sends the first step, and if that fails HubSpot can't see why. Retry after a few minutes or enroll from the contact record. A Something went wrong error can come from a wrong computer clock, since HubSpot won't enroll a contact when the send time is already past (enrollment errors).
How to get a stalled sequence sending again
- On the Enrollments tab, filter by the user whose emails stopped and count the contacts under Paused and Error.
- Have that user check the Email tab in their General settings and reconnect the inbox if it dropped.
- Check the step each stuck contact is on. If it's a task, complete it from the task queue or the contact record.
- If the sequence or a contact is paused, choose Resume from the Actions menu.
- Re-enroll contacts that ended in Error. On the Enrollments tab, open Actions next to the contact, choose Reenroll and set the step they should start at, so nobody gets an email twice. The inbox used for the original enrollment must still be connected (managing enrollments).
- If the daily limit is the issue, spread enrollments over several days. The enrollment panel shows the remaining Daily email limit and asks for another send date once you're over.
- Enroll one test contact you control and watch the first two steps arrive before re-enrolling everyone.
How to stop it happening again
Ask reps to tell you before they change an email password or mail provider, and reconnect straight after. Keep task steps for places where a rep really has to act. Look at the Error status on your busiest sequences once a week, and before loading a big list, check what each sender already has scheduled against their daily limit.
From client work
At Frontline Facility Partners I run the HubSpot sequences for a national outreach program. Bounces kept hurting sends. Part of the weekly loop now is removing bounced contacts from HubSpot and marking them in the master lead list, and contacts go into sequences in daily batches.

Questions
I edited a sequence email. Why do enrolled contacts still get the old version?
Editor changes only apply to contacts enrolled after you save. People already in the sequence keep the old steps unless you unenroll them and enroll them again at their next step, and Reenroll doesn't pick up your edits (editing an active sequence).
Can HubSpot raise my daily sequence limit?
HubSpot says it can't increase the sequence send limit, and trial accounts don't get a higher one. The seat sets the default limit, so an Enterprise seat allows more than a Professional seat. On Sales Hub Professional or Enterprise, an admin can also set a custom daily send limit, and that takes precedence over the seat limit.
Why did the first email send and none of the follow-ups?
The first step sends as soon as possible by default. Follow-ups wait for their delay, business days and the send window, and a task step holds them until it's done. A disconnected inbox stops them too.
Did this fix it?
Good to hear. If something else in the portal looks off, the help centre has more fixes.
