Contact unsubscribed by mistake? How to resubscribe them in HubSpot

Which HubSpot opt-outs you can reverse yourself, and how a contact who unsubscribed can opt back in through the right channels.

Whether you can resubscribe a contact in HubSpot depends on who unsubscribed them. If the contact clicked unsubscribe or saved your preferences page themselves, HubSpot expects the contact to opt back in on their own. You can't reverse that in bulk or with a workflow. If a user or a workflow in your account opted them out, you can undo it yourself, but only if you have the contact's consent. Write where that consent came from in the explanation field when HubSpot asks for it.

So start with the contact's subscription history. On the contact record, click View subscriptions in the Communication subscriptions section, then open the History tab to see when each subscription changed. If you can't tell whether the change came from the contact or from your side, treat it as the contact's own choice.

How contacts end up unsubscribed by mistake

They saved the preferences page with boxes unticked

The Manage preferences link in a marketing email opens a page with one checkbox per subscription type. When the contact clicks Update email preferences, every type left unticked is marked as unsubscribed. Someone who meant to change one setting can drop several types this way, and it still counts as the contact's own opt-out.

They clicked unsubscribe from all

The contact has to confirm on the confirmation page, and after that they get no marketing emails until they resubscribe. On the record, the Unsubscribed from all email property shows true.

Someone on your team opted them out

This is the case you can fix. It can come from the Opt out of email action on a contact record, which also stops one-to-one emails, from a bulk Edit communication subscriptions change on the contacts index page, or from a workflow using the Manage communication subscriptions action on the wrong contacts. Make sure it really was a mistake before you reverse it. If the contact asked your team to take them off, the opt-out stands.

How to resubscribe a contact the right way

If a user or workflow opted them out

  1. For one contact, open View subscriptions on the record, hover over the subscription type and click Resubscribe. Pick the subscription type, choose a legal basis for communicating, enter the explanation of consent, and add a legal basis to process the contact's data.
  2. For a group, select the contacts on the contacts index page, click More, then Edit communication subscriptions. Choose Email, set the status to Opt in (or Subscribe if data privacy settings are off), pick the subscription types, and enter the explanation, plus a legal basis if data privacy settings are on. From the index page you can also remove an opt-out of all email that a user added by hand. HubSpot asks for an extra confirmation if the change affects 10,000 or more contacts or 10% or more of your contacts.
  3. With a workflow, which needs a Professional or Enterprise plan, use the Manage communication subscriptions action. It works for contacts unsubscribed through user actions, such as a manual unsubscribe or that same workflow action. It won't resubscribe anyone who opted out themselves.

All three are in HubSpot's guide to managing contact subscriptions. HubSpot reminds you to make sure you have consent before resubscribing anyone, so write an explanation that says where that consent came from.

If the contact unsubscribed themselves

The contact has to take the action. HubSpot's resubscribe guide gives them three ways back in:

  • Open any marketing email you've sent them and click Manage preferences in the footer, then tick the subscriptions they want.
  • Fill in a HubSpot form whose consent checkbox is mapped to a subscription type. Ticking the box subscribes them to that type. The box can't be pre-ticked, and leaving it unticked doesn't withdraw consent they gave before.
  • Request a resubscription email from a form that isn't tied to a subscription type, then click the link in that email. You turn this on under the Resubscription and sending options section of the Subscriptions tab in your marketing email settings. It needs Marketing Hub Professional or Enterprise, as of October 2026.

The contact record also shows a Resubscribe option for these contacts. HubSpot's resubscribe guide says that manual option should only be used when the contact was opted out manually in HubSpot, so don't use it to override the contact's own unsubscribe.

What not to do

Don't delete and recreate the contact, and don't change their email address to get around an opt-out. Subscription status is tied to the email address, so a recreated contact with the same address keeps it. Changing the address does make the old opt-out stop applying, but the person still asked you not to email them. Don't use a re-engagement campaign to win back consent either. HubSpot says those campaigns are only for reconfirming consent a contact already gave, and it requires a verifiable opt-in record for every contact in a marketing send. Your legal team is the right place for questions about your specific situation.

How to stop it happening again

Test any workflow that uses Manage communication subscriptions on a test contact before you turn it on, and check its enrollment triggers twice. Keep bulk subscription edits to a few people who know the rules. Have a form with a consent checkbox for each subscription type, so anyone who unsubscribed by mistake has a clear way back. Once a contact is subscribed again, if your emails still don't reach them, the cause is somewhere else, and why contacts aren't receiving marketing emails walks through the Not sent reasons.

Questions

Can I resubscribe contacts in bulk?

Only contacts who were opted out by a user or a workflow. If a contact opted out themselves, HubSpot won't add that subscription back through bulk actions or workflows.

Can an unsubscribed contact still get emails from my sales team?

HubSpot says contacts who opted out of marketing email can still get one-to-one and transactional emails. A manual Opt out of email on the record blocks one-to-one email too, and when Unsubscribed from all email is true, HubSpot's email tools won't send to the contact. Check the record before you write.

Does a form submission resubscribe a contact?

It does when the form's consent checkbox is mapped to a subscription type and the contact ticks it. They're subscribed to that type.
