When a HubSpot deal amount doesn't match its line items, or won't change when the line items do, start with the Default deal amount setting. It decides what Amount becomes when line items change: total contract value, annual contract value, ARR, MRR or Manual entry. With Manual entry, adding or removing line items leaves Amount alone. With ARR or MRR, one-time items such as a setup fee aren't counted.
The setting is in Settings, Data Management, Objects, Deals, under Setup. Then open one deal that looks wrong and click Edit on its Line items card. HubSpot shows TCV, ACV, ARR and MRR above the line item editor. If Amount matches one of those, you know which calculation you're looking at. If it matches none, Amount was typed in, set by something else, or not updated after the line items last changed.
Why the deal amount is wrong or not updating
The default deal amount uses a different calculation
Each option counts something different. Total contract value adds up every line item, recurring and one-time. Annual contract value is the deal's value over 12 months. ARR uses only recurring line items and assumes a 12-month term if none is set. MRR is the recurring value per month. Manual entry means adding or removing line items doesn't change Amount, so someone has to update it. HubSpot explains each one in its deal defaults article. Changing the setting doesn't update existing deals, so older deals keep whatever Amount they had.
Someone saved the line items without updating the amount
When a user saves changes in the line item editor, HubSpot asks whether to update the deal amount to match the new line items or save without changing it. Pick the second option and the line items change while Amount stays where it was.
The line items came from an import, the API or an integration
HubSpot doesn't update the deal amount when line items are imported or updated through the API, according to its line items guide. So if a shop, ERP or quoting tool imports or updates your line items through the API, the line items can look right on the deal while Amount stays at whatever the integration set, or empty. The integration has to write Amount itself, or someone has to save the line items through the editor and choose to update the amount.
The currencies don't line up
Amount is stored in the deal's own currency. Amount in company currency converts it with your exchange rate, so the two differ on any deal that isn't in your company currency. Line items have to be priced in the deal's currency too. If one isn't, the Line items card shows a Missing currency alert next to it. Fixing a line item's currency needs a Sales Hub Professional or Enterprise subscription and an assigned Sales Hub Professional or Enterprise seat, as of October 2026, per HubSpot's currency settings article.
The board view is another source of confusion. The stage totals at the bottom of the board show company currency by default, unless the user picked a preferred currency in their own settings.
Discounts, future payments and rounding
A unit discount applies to a single line item and is entered in the Unit discount column of the line item editor. A one-time order discount works differently. It's available on one-time invoices, payment links and legacy quotes, applies to the order total and shows up in payment properties such as Total discount amount. If the gap between the deal and what the customer paid matches an order discount, that's where it came from.
In the line item summary, the Subtotal only covers items due at checkout. Items billed later sit under Future payments, and Total contract value includes both. Differences of a cent or two can come from rounding. Unit prices can have up to six decimal places, and HubSpot rounds TCV, ACV, ARR and MRR to the currency's precision.
A workflow or integration overwrites Amount
If Amount keeps changing back, open the deal's property history for Amount and read the Source for each change. A workflow, an import or a sync that sets Amount on every update will undo any fix you make by hand. How to find what changed a property walks through tracing it.
How to fix the deal amount
- Decide what Amount should mean for your team, then check that Default deal amount matches it.
- On a deal that's wrong, open the line item editor and look for Missing currency alerts. Fix the currencies first.
- Compare Amount with the TCV, ACV, ARR and MRR shown above the editor.
- Check the property history of Amount to see what last set it.
- Save the line items and choose to update the deal amount when HubSpot asks.
- For many deals created by an integration, change the integration so it writes Amount. On Professional and Enterprise plans, a deal workflow with the Edit record action can also copy a value into Amount, as long as the source and target property types are compatible.
- Check that revenue reports sum the property you meant. In a multi-currency account that's usually Amount in company currency, as covered in why closed won revenue looks wrong.
How to stop it happening again
Choose the default deal amount once, write down what it means, and tell reps what the save prompt in the line item editor does. For every integration that creates line items, decide who owns Amount, the integration or HubSpot, and make sure only one of them writes it. The Line items card and editor only display up to 200 line items, even when more are associated, so on very large deals you won't see every item there.
From client work
At Sauna Heater Supply, more than 80% of orders start as rep-built draft orders in Shopify, which HubSpot couldn't see. Shopify Flow now creates a HubSpot deal for every draft order and syncs the amount every 10 minutes, so the deal keeps the current quote value, and it closes the right deal when the order is paid. For more on that pattern, see my guide on Shopify draft orders and HubSpot deals.
If your deal amounts and revenue reports still don't agree after these checks, I can audit your deals and integrations and fix them.
Questions
Why doesn't my deal amount include the one-time setup fee?
Your default deal amount is probably ARR or MRR, which only count recurring line items. Total contract value includes one-time items.
Does changing the default deal amount update old deals?
No. HubSpot doesn't apply a new calculation to existing deals. To bring an old deal in line, save its line items again and choose to update the amount.
Why is the deal amount higher than the legacy quote total?
If your deal amount uses TCV, it counts future-dated line items. By default, a published legacy quote only totals the items due at checkout, so those are left out of the quote total.
